PETERSON EMPLOYEE SAFE PRACTICES AND OPERATIONS CODE

  1. All persons shall follow these safe practice rules, render every possible aid to safe operations, and report all unsafe conditions or practices to the proper authority.
  2. Foremen shall insist on employees observing and obeying every rule, regulation and order as is necessary to the safe conduct of the work, and shall take such action as is necessary to obtain observance.
  3. All employees shall be given frequent accident prevention instructions. Instructions will be given every 10 working days.
  4. Anyone known to be under the influence of intoxication liquor or drugs shall not be allowed on the job while in that condition.
  5. Horseplay, scuffling and other acts which tend to have an adverse influence on the safety or well being of the employees are prohibited.
  6. Work shall be well planned and supervised to forestall injuries in the handling of heavy materials and in working together with equipment.
  7. No one shall knowingly be permitted or required to work while his ability or alertness is so impaired by fatigue, illness or other causes that it might unnecessarily expose them or others to injury.
  8. Employees shall not enter manholes, underground vaults, chambers, tanks, silos or other similar places that receive little ventilation, unless it has been determined that the air contains no flammable or toxic gases or vapors. Ventilate thoroughly if no means of testing is available.
  9. Employees shall be alert to see that all guards and other protective devices are in proper places and adjusted, and shall report deficiencies promptly to the foreman or superintendent.
  10. Crowding or pushing when boarding or leaving any vehicle or other conveyance is prohibited.
  11. Workers shall not handle or tamper with any electrical equipment, machinery, air or waterlines in a manner not within the scope of their duties, unless they have received instructions from their foreman.
  12. ALL INJURIES SHALL BE REPORTED IMMEDIATELY to an authorized representative of the employer, so that arrangements can be made for medical or first aid treatment.
  13. When lifting heavy objects, use the large muscles of the leg instead of the smaller muscles of the back.
  14. Personal protection equipment (hard hats, eye protection and respirators) will be worn when needed.
  15. Do not throw material, tools or other objects from buildings or structures until proper precautions are taken to protect others from the falling object hazard.
  16. Wash thoroughly after handling poisonous substances and follow all special instructions from authorized sources regarding this matter. Hands should be thoroughly cleaned just prior to eating if they have been in contact with paint or similar substances. Use rubber gloves when handling toxic substances.
  17. Clothing required: shirt (minimum: tank top); full=length trousers; acceptable work boots or shoes; no sandals.
  18. Arrange work so that you are able to face ladder and use both hands while climbing.
  19. Gasoline shall not be used for cleaning purposes.
  20. No burning, welding or other sources of ignition shall be applied to any enclosed tank or vessel, even if there are some openings, until it has first been determined that no possibility of explosion exists, and authority for the work is obtained from the employer's representative.
  21. Any damage to scaffolds, false work or other supporting structures must be repaired or reported promptly to foreman.
  22. USE OF TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT

  23. Keep faces of hammers in good condition to avoid flying nails and bruised fingers.
  24. Hold cold chisels in such a way that the knuckles will be protected if the hammer misses the head. Tongs or similar holding devices should hold chisels struck by others.
  25. Do not use pipe or Stilson wrenches as a substitute for other wrenches.
  26. Wrenches should not be altered by the addition of handle extensions or "cheaters".
  27. Files shall be equipped with handles. Never use a file as a punch or pry.
  28. Do not use a screwdriver as a chisel.
  29. Keep handsaws sharp.
  30. Do not push wheelbarrow with handles in an upright position.
  31. Do not lift or lower portable electric tools by means of the power cord. Use a rope.
  32. Do not leave the cords or portable electric tools where cars or trucks will run over them.
  33. In locations where the handling of a portable power tool is a problem, try handing it from a stable object by means of a rope or similar support of adequate strength.
  34. MACHINERY

  35. Do not attempt to operate machinery or equipment without special permission, unless that is one of your regular duties.
  36. Loose or frayed clothing, dangling ties, finger rings, etc., shall not be worn around moving machinery or other sources of entanglement.
  37. Machinery shall not be repaired or adjusted while in operation, nor shall oiling of moving parts be attempted, except on equipment that is designed or fitted with safeguards to protect person performing the work.
  38. Do not work under vehicles supported by jacks or chain hoists, without protective blocking that will prevent injury if jacks or hoists should fall.
  39. Air hoses should not be disconnected at compressors until hose line has been bled.
  40. Examine excavation before back filling, so as to be positive no one is in it.
  41. Be sure no one is below, before operating excavating equipment near tops of cuts, banks and cliffs.
  42. Operations of tractors, bulldozers and carryalls should be handled with care where there is a possibility of overturning in dangerous areas like edges of deep fills, cut banks and steep slopes.
  43. EXCAVATION

  44. Employees shall not enter excavations until they are properly shored and/or sloped.
  45. Excavations shall be shored or sloped in accordance with OSHA Regulations.
  46. Access by ladder, rope or slope shall be provided within 25 feet of the work area.
  47. Hard hats must be worn in excavation areas.

VEHICLES

Our insurance policy states: "Only company employees may operate or ride in company owned vehicles. Operation of vehicles under the influence of alcohol will not be allowed. Seat belts are required by law."

TOXICS

  1. Use proper personal protective equipment; i.e., gloves, eye protection and respirators
  2. Discharge of any toxics into the environment is not allowed.
  3. Report any accidents or spills to supervisor immediately.
  4. Venting of refrigerants into the atmosphere is not allowed. (Please see PMI Refrigerant Policy)
  5. Peterson Mechanical, Inc. and its employees will not work around asbestos. Notify your supervisor or the office if you think asbestos is present. DO NOT WORK IN AREA!!!

SAFETY TALKS

PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT

  1. Use the correct personal safety protection for each job assignment.
  2. Hard hats must be worn on job sites at all times.
  3. All employees and visitors MUST wear ANSI approved safety glasses at all times in the production shop and on the job site.
  4. Shop employees must wear industrial work shoes in the production areas or on the job site. The shoes must have complete leather uppers and skid resistant soles and be in good condition. Steel toe protection is recommended. Athletic style shoes, open toe shoes, plastic shoes, vinyl shoes or shoes with decorative accessories are not allowed in the production area while you are working.
  5. Be sure the protective clothing you wear will not hamper or restrict freedom of movement due to improper fit.
  6. Shirts with sleeves must be worn at all times.
  7. Clothing that exposes bare legs is not allowed while working in the production area.
  8. Do not wear loose, torn or frayed clothing, dangling ties, finger rings, dangling earrings or other jewelry items, or long hair unless contained in a hair net, while operating any machine, which could cause entanglement.
  9. If required, wear NIOSHA approved respirators when applying paint, welding, grinding or working with chemicals. Read the MSDS to find out which type of respirators are required. Facial hair may not be permitted in certain circumstances.
  10. Face shield with safety glasses are recommended when grinding.
  11. Employees working in any shop area must wear hearing protection.

LIFTING SAFETY RULES

  1. Size up the weight and size of a load prior to picking it up.
  2. If a load is too heavy or bulky to carry alone, ask someone for help.
  3. Remember good lifting posture; keep your ears, shoulders and hips aligned.
  4. When you have to pick something off the floor, squat down keeping your back straight, rather than bending over.
  5. While handling a load, instead of twisting your body, turn your whole body in the direction that you want to go.
