2010 Trends: Sutter aims for October ground breaking

SANTA ROSA –Having begun the environmental impact report process last January and with a unanimous resolution by the Sonoma County Board of Supervisors in July — reaffirming Sutter Health’s 2008 business plan and its compliance with HCAA — Sutter is moving ahead with plans to break ground for the new Sutter Medical Center at Mark West Springs Road off Highway 101 between Sept. and Oct. 1, 2010. If all goes as planned, this new hospital will be completed in 2013.

Breaking ground before the end of 2010 is crucial if Sutter Health is to be eligible for a two-year extension in order to be compliant with the state’s seismic requirements. The Department of Health Services will make a final recommendation to the board of supervisors on the business plan sometime during the summer of 2010.

“The first planning commission hearing to gain public comment on our draft EIR plan took place Dec. 10,” said Lisa Amador, administrative director for support services for Sutter Medical Center of Santa Rosa. ‘The next public hearing is scheduled for Jan. 14. After comments are received, we will begin preparing for a final EIR. When this phase is completed, we will go back to the Sonoma County Board of Supervisors to initiate the entitlement process for public access and to start work at the site adjacent to the Wells Fargo Center for the Arts.”

According to Ms. Amador, many people in the greater community still think that Sutter is closing its hospital. “We’re not closing, far from it. We continue to serve local residents by providing excellent quality care at the Sutter Medical Center of Santa Rosa [the former Community Hospital site] as well as through a network of more than 25 Sutter Pacific Medical Foundation care centers in Sonoma County. With other foundation organizational improvements on our drawing board for the new year, we will also be in a position to offer patients access to an increased variety of specialty services not currently available locally in the West Bay region.”

The new $176 million Sutter Health hospital project to date has involved more than 14 contractors, vendors and consulting firms in planning for this new facility, including Blakeslee Electric, Brelje & Race, Aspinall & Associates, Concept Development Associates, CQA Inc., Gillotti Construction, Horticulture Associates, Illingsworth and Rodkin Inc., Mead & Hunt Inc., Peterson Mechanical Inc., PG&E, Quadriga Landscape Architecture and Planning, Sponamore Associates and Tom Origer & Associates.

As are most in health care, Sutter is closely watching the Washington, D.C., health care debate for its possible impacts locally.

“One possible wrinkle in our building plans is that national health care reform could affect our ability to construct the physician’s medical office building on this new campus. The federal reform package, as currently written, could prohibit physician firms from being in a joint venture with a hospital. Either way, we are moving forward with plans to build a new Sutter Medical Center in Santa Rosa,” Ms. Amador said.

This new facility will be a LEED-registered project.

Peterson School Project in American Libraries Magazine

The April 2009 Design & Construction issue of American Libraries Magazine featured various projects including the Frank P. Doyle Library located on the Santa Rosa Junior College Campus in which Peterson Mechanical provided a 400-ton thermal energy storage system, low-temperature VAV air handling, split- system cooling, heating hot water and general plumbing (link).

SRJC FRANK P. DOYLE LIBRARY

Santa Rosa, CA

TLCD Architecture

The new Main Library for Santa Rosa Junior College sits at the heart of the oak studded brick campus. Working with Shepley Bulfinch Richardson and Abbott Architects of Boston, this new 145,000 s.f. library is one of the finest community college libraries in the state. Student use of the Library has tripled since opening in the fall of 2006. Comfortably fitted into the historic campus center, this $45 million dollar project reflects the substance of a major academic library on a historic campus while clearly being at the leading edge of library design.

This library design focuses on an environment for teaching and learning information literacy. Collaborative work environments such as group studies, a coffee bar, and Center for New Media for faculty and staff make the library the social, cultural and symbolic center of the campus. A museum quality art gallery and bustling Tutorial Center reinforce the vibrancy of the building. Furniture and interior design for collaborative work were a paramount concern in the design of the new library.

The Frank P. Doyle Library incorporates a number of strategies to make the facility more sustainable. To accomplish this, and to increase the long-term efficiency in operational costs the building employs a variety of strategies including:

• Thermal Energy Storage Ice Banks
• A 58 Kilowatt photovoltaic array on the roof
• White “cool roof” coatings
• Use of large windows and skylights
• PVC free wall coverings, low VOC interior finishes and high recycled content in furnishings

www.rebuildingtogether.org

Dear Mr. Peterson:

On behalf of Rebuilding Together Rohnert Park-Cotati, we would like to extend a special thank you to you and your company for assisting us in providing a furnace to a low-income family in need and to Mike Broadhead for the installation.

The mission of Rebuiilding Together Rohnert Park-Cotati is to rehabiliate the homes of low-income homeowners, particularly the elderly and those who special needs so that they may live in safety, comfort and independence. We do this at no cost to the homeowners. All materials are provided through donations; we are happy to say that every dollar we receive is quadrupled by in-kind donations and volunteer labor allowing us to serve more people. Labor for these projects is provided by skilled, semi skilled and unskilled volunteers. It is a wonderful program.

We have our annual Rebuild Day coming soon, Saturday, April 26th, and have identified 16 projects to be worked on that day. On March 11th, we will be hosting an informational reception at the Standards of Excellence Show Room in Rohnert Park for those what want to know more about our programs. Watch for you invitiaton and we hope your company will be represented.

HVAC Contractors add 150 employees

Peterson Mechanical also added 25 jobs and is preparing to start with two pending management hires, according to owner Les Peterson. Key to the growth, set to reach $32 million in revenue this year and $40 million next year, are multiyear contracts on large projects for Kaiser Permanente, Queen of the Valley and Sutter Health as well as the Green Music Center at Sonoma State University. Another major factor in the growth is an emphasis on growing their commercial service division. "We're involved in the building of a lot of buildings, but we've never gone back and said we can do service contracts," Mr. Peterson said. Company revenue is presently $30.2 million.
